Meghan Campbell, a "Creativeskater", for March/April 2009
By: Elizabeth Hollett Shackett
Meghan Campbell, age 5, has recently discovered the ice. She started in her first Learn-to-Skate class at the University of Delaware in March 2008. She continued that same fall and was in my Tots class on my first day as a coach at the UD. Amidst the buzz of all the skaters who were excited for a new season, Meghan stood quietly at attention, bright-eyed and smiling back at her mom who stood behind the glass. She was eager to learn!
This Kindergartner maintains an enthusiasm for skating. She continues to do Learn-to-Skate and has just passed her Pre-Alpha 2 badge. She also does a weekly private lesson with me during which we have been choreographing her very first program to music! Meghan has been inspired and freely tells me her ideas for poses, arm movements and skating skills for her program. It has been rewarding to see this beginner figure skater’s spirit come alive on the ice. I am sure that her Ballet and Tap dance teachers would be pleased to know that she has taken her creativity to the ice.
Her favorite things about skating are stroking, spinning and hopping. She can’t wait to learn how to jump and spin in the air. Meghan is excited to skate in her first competition with her new program. She will be skating to “Stupid Cupid” at the ISI District IV Championships at the University of Delaware in April. The music program is 1-minute in length and will display her skating skills she has mastered from the Learn-to-Skate curriculum. She is also considering trying out for the UD synchronized skating team next season.
I plan to revisit this Skater of the Month
to update the journey of a beginner. |
